A Villain Series
A Descent Into Darkness
When inner darkness pushes us to face our own mortality, we are left with two choices: accept defeat or return to power.
This series, shot on 35mm & medium format film, explores the visual components of the villain archetype.
By creating thematic contrast in aspects like clothing, expression, location, I attempt to capture the villains’ transition. From light to dark, weak to powerful, defeated to thriving.

The Villain’s Journey
To understand the villain, we must first face the darkness. At the lowest points we face, it is tempting to accept the role of victim to life’s hardships. The villain is the person who chooses to identify with the darkness and use it to regain their power. In this series I create two sided characters to showcase the quest for power a villain faces. To create consistency across the series I focused on power as a theme in both posing and color. Often I chose red as the primary accent color and shot from a lower angle to create a sense of dominance from the villain. Eye contact remains a cornerstone of my style as it creates an undeniable connection with the viewer.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
After finding photography as a means of handling mental health challenges, I knew I wanted to create my first larger body of work around that subject. Facing these challenges alone is not easy and something I hope no one has to do, so I created this series to inspire those struggling to regain their power. Accepting my challenges helped me regain control of my life and photography became a way for me to talk about these challenges more openly. I’ve formed a deep therapeutic relationship with creating on film, especially medium format, because of the attention it requires. I direct all my work with absolute attention, trying to create images that wouldn’t exist without me. Minting my work as a 1/1 strongly reflects the way I create my work. My goal with this series as an NFT project is to raise money for foundations that support those struggling with mental health challenges through art.
